Yardhouse

Yardhouse is a new-build home located within the rear yard of Corner, a coffee shop, gallery and community hub in New Cross. Designed as a contemporary interpretation of the surrounding conservation area, the project draws on local architectural character through its use of London stock brick, arched openings and decorative detailing.

Conceived as a home for queer living, the house challenges conventional domestic arrangements by removing internal walls and allowing spaces to flow into one another. Sleeping, washing and living areas are deliberately intertwined, creating a flexible framework that can adapt to different patterns of cohabitation, care and everyday life.

Developed on a constrained urban infill site, the project demonstrates the potential of underused land to deliver high-quality housing within established neighbourhoods. The house will be constructed using reclaimed and locally sourced materials wherever possible, alongside biodiverse planting that supports local ecology and urban greening.
